Darren began square dancing at the age of 13 with his younger sister. The local club in Lompoc, California, didn’t allow children at the time so they took lessons at a club 30 miles away in Santa Maria.
He was immediately drawn to the music and the calling of square dance.. Darrly Hamilton, the caller who taught him to dance, also gave him his first square dance record “Something About You Baby, I Like”, and taught him to call.
He called his first full dance at the Valley Whilers in Santa Maria at the age of 15. His parents, who also dance, had to take him because he didn’t yet have his driver’s license. It wasn’t long after that dance that he became the Club Caller!
For the past 3 years, his calling has taken him to clubs and festivals all over the US and Canada. He’s recorded numerous square dance records with labels like Coyote Records, Scope/Big Mac Records, and Dance Ranch Records.
Darren calls/teaches for Cuesta Squares in San Luis Obispo, California, and calls for many clubs throughout Southern California. He lives with his partner Thom Dang about an hour Northwest of Santa Barbara, CA.
Anne grew up Toronto Canada and studied to be a veterinarian. One chance weekend visit with her parents at a square dance camp changed her life. They pulled her into a square that was short one, and by the end of her weekend “blast” she was dancing almost at the Plus level!
Anne was a natural and was soon calling even above her own dance level. She was the first female caller to crash through the upper level glass ceiling (and now calls up to C3B).
Fast forward to 2019, Anne’s been calling for 42 years in the US, Canada, and abroad. She earned the 1995 IAGSDC Golden Boot Award and is a frequent instructor at the GCA caller school and a frequent staff caller at IAGSDC conventions (she recently earned her 30 year IAGSDC Medallion).
Anne and her wife Mary currently reside in Auburn, Washington.
